Silica sand is the starting point for the manu-facture of water-soluble sodium silicates, and other downstream silicon chemicals, such as silica gels, silicones, silanes and zeolites, which have a wide range of applications. In addition to a low iron content, a sand with a very low alumina content is also required for sodium silicates manufacture.
